This layer is just below my eye level, so trains are hidden by the trees at either end of the benchwork. This enhances the illusion of the two railroads coming alongside for a brief time and sharing an interchange track before going on their respective ways. The shelf is just 12" deep for most of it's length, widening to 20" at the left end to allow the separate rail lines spread apart. The interchange track can hold up to 7 40' cars, but 3-5 cars are more typically staged for an operating session.

Not shown, but both lines curve into a staging yard on the right side, allowing room to stage 3 trains and have an engine escape track so trains can be "turned".
